Frequently Asked Questions

Planning your visit from the cruise ship? Here’s everything you need to know.

How far is 3 Queens Distillery from the cruise ship dock?
We’re located in the heart of Charlotte Amalie’s historic district at 13 Wimmelskafts Gade (Back Street). From Havensight dock, it’s about a 5–6 minute taxi ride or a 25-minute walk. From Crown Bay, grab a quick taxi to downtown — about 5–6 minutes. Tell the driver “13 Wimmelskafts Gade, the distillery.” Licensed taxis are available right at the port.
Do I need to make reservations or can I just walk in?
Walk-ins are always welcome at the distillery, garden and museum. But Charlotte Amalie can get really busy on heavy cruise ship days. Even though we are off the beaten path and usually not overrun with people, we do sometimes have large groups coming and wouldn’t want your experience to be less than amazing — so calling ahead is always encouraged.
Is the distillery family friendly? What’s the drinking age in the U.S. Virgin Islands?
Yes, kids of all ages are welcome. The legal drinking age in the U.S. Virgin Islands is 18 — three years younger than the U.S. mainland. Children and non-drinkers can enjoy our tropical garden, historic slave house museum, and the story of the distillery. Adults in the group can taste our rum, vodka, and gin.
Can I buy rum to take home — and can I bring it on the ship?
Yes! Our spirits are available for purchase and make excellent souvenirs. As a U.S. territory, the U.S. Virgin Islands offers favorable duty-free allowances for returning cruise passengers — you can bring back more than you can from most international ports. We recommend checking your cruise line’s specific bottle policy for carry-on rules. Our team is happy to help you pack your bottles safely for ship or plane travel.
What exactly will I see and taste on the visit?

You’ll walk through a working distillery housed inside a 200-year-old building that was once part of a Corsican merchant’s estate. You’ll see our fermentation and distilling equipment, oak barrels, learn about our rum-making process, and hear the story of the Three Queens of Fireburn — the real women our distillery is named after. Also see historical artifacts dating back to the Pre-Columbian Taino Indians.

You can sample our flagship sipping rum, our locally-botanicals gin (lemongrass and basil), and our sugarcane vodka. Our tropical garden has shaded seating — a great place to sip and decompress mid-port-day.

And for the ultimate island-vibe experience, make your own painkiller cocktail that originated here in the Virgin Islands (Jost Van Dyke, to be exact).

Is 3 Queens the oldest distillery in the Virgin Islands?
Yes. Officially, 3 Queens is the Virgin Islands’ oldest craft distillery and St. Thomas’ oldest distillery. Unofficially, the distillery operates from a site with over 200 years of spirits-making history. The building itself — St. Thomas’ only remaining 18th-century slave house — is a piece of Virgin Islands history you can’t see anywhere else. Our distillery is also one of the only in the world owned and operated by a Black woman, Amber, a native Virgin Islander. On most days, she is at the distillery leading the tastings and greeting friends and guests from across the globe that come to visit.
